Trading in Nigeria: the rules, the risks and the hours (2026)
We found no rule banning individuals from trading forex and CFDs in Nigeria. What the law targets is the business side: platforms must be registered with the SEC under the Investments and Securities Act 2025. In September 2026 the SEC published draft rules for online forex and CFD brokers and their introducers, not yet in force. Check any broker on the SEC's site before sending money.

| Who regulates online forex | The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), under the Investments and Securities Act 2025. According to a press report of April 2025, the SEC said that operating an online forex trading platform without SEC registration is an offence. The statements we found are aimed at platforms and operators; we found no rule aimed at individual traders. | Prompt News, 13 Apr 2025 (press report) |
| New rules (status) | On 1 September 2026 the SEC published draft Rules on Online Forex Trading and Contracts for Difference. As of our last check they are a draft, not yet in force. | Daily Trust (press report) |
| What the draft would change for brokers | Brokers serving Nigerian residents, including offshore ones, would need to be licensed by the SEC, would have to hold client money in segregated accounts at CBN-licensed banks, and would need SEC approval before offering naira pairs. | Business Post, 2 Sep 2026 (press report) |
| Introducers and influencers | The draft creates a licensed introducing-broker category (minimum capital N30 million for individuals, N150 million for companies) and requires brokers to file all advertising and influencer promotions with the SEC for approval. | Business Post, 2 Sep 2026 (press report) |
| Time zone | West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year, no daylight saving. The US stock market opens at 14:30 Lagos time while New York is on daylight saving time (second Sunday of March to first Sunday of November) and at 15:30 the rest of the year. | IANA time-zone database |
| Internet access | About 107 million internet users at the start of 2025, 45% of the population. | DataReportal, Digital 2025: Nigeria |
How to protect yourself before choosing a broker
- Look the company up on the SEC Nigeria website and note the exact legal name and licence number. A licence held by a sister company in another country does not cover the entity you are signing with.
- Be wary of anyone promising fixed daily or monthly returns, "account management" or profits that supposedly cannot fail. Regulators across Africa repeatedly warn about these schemes.
- Test withdrawals with a small amount before depositing more. Delayed or refused withdrawals are a frequent complaint from Nigerian traders on public forums.
- Remember that leverage cuts both ways: most retail CFD accounts lose money, which is why brokers in many countries must publish their loss rate.
- See when the markets you trade are open in Lagos time on our market hours page, and read how we test strategies before trusting anyone's backtest.
What we do not do
Empirical Quant does not sell signals or manage money for Nigerian residents, and this page contains no broker links. When the SEC's final rules are published we will update this guide and the date at the top.
